In The Clouds At Rockfish Gap Overlook!
After an amazing weekend family getaway in Waynesboro, the family piled in the car to make the journey home. According to our GPS, I64 West was our quickest route but, we were in no rush so decided to cruise the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Personally I prefer to take the backroads, the reason why? Check out my blog: Top 3 reasons To Take The Back Roads HERE!
This particular trip was no different. After making our way through we saw signs for the Rockfish Gap Overlook. As we came around the corner, even from the car we all were totally taken away by the sheer sight.
Rockfish Gap is part of the beautiful Skyline Drive which is a 105 mile stretch of road that runs north and south along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park. Rockfish Gap known as a “wind gap” located in the Blue Ridge Mountains between Charlottesville and Waynesboro, Virginia. has an elevation of about 1,900 feet (580 m) making it one of the lowest gaps between Manassas Gap and the James River.
The overlook sight rests on a shoulder which is about 50ft wide. While its a beautiful sight, keep little ones close as you can still see vehicles driving at speeds of around 45mph about 20 or so feet away. There is a low stone wall with two free viewfinders that the boys immediately rushed to and of course fought over. From that point you feel on top of the world and can see everything. Even though a few feet behind you there are cars whizzing down the mountain, you feel as though you are on floating.
Now, visiting a place like this Id usually say the best views are on clear cloudless days but on this day we the boys learned what it meant to be amongst the clouds! Due to the partly cloudy nature of the day we were met with what are called “Lenticular Clouds” which gave the look of truly feeling like you are flying!
On a road trip or just passing through? Take the Blue Ridge Parkway for all of the sights, you’ll be glad you did!
