This is a blog about Philly Cheesesteaks!
I once took my wife, [girlfriend at the time] to Illadelphia for spring break cause I wanted to try the legit cheesesteaks... Maybe not the first thing people think of when talking about spring breaky but I’m not most people.
Looking back, it was a great trip though! We stayed in a hotel that had a perfect view of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge [no lie I googled the bridge name 🤷🏾♂️]. We walked and found a number of shops, including Exit Skateshop and the boutique Ubiq . But enough about that, this is a blog about cheesesteaks remember?
Leaving Exit, I asked dude about the subject. His immediate response was “Don’t go to Pat’s or Geno’s, they are tourist traps now and not what they used to be.” He did recommend one joint that was “In a part of town that is a little rough, but it the best in the city”. Being me, we googled it and were on our way. Unfooortunatley I forget the name of said cheesesteak spot but I don’t forget my experience.
I hyped myself up, I was finally in Philly getting an og cheesesteak. I walked up to the counter and then fell on my face when I told the guy behind the counter “one Philly cheesesteak please!”
“No shit, what do you want on it?”
Any way I tell this story simply to explain my deep love for a delicious cheesesteak. Now as for where to get a delicious cheesesteak of your own here in the Hampton Roads that’s a different story;
Philly Cold Cuts-
OG Philadelphia Cold Cuts with 40 years in the game and voted best in Virginia Beach, these cats are clearly doing something right. With TWO locations both in VB, even Pharrell and Pusha T know to drop in on occasion. Don’t want cheesesteaks on a hoagie roll? Cop a Philly Burger, single, double or triple even. OR how about some Philly Cheesesteak sidewinder fries? Fam, you’ve got options!
Philly Style Steaks & Subs
When the name of the shop is the name of the item they sell, they sell the hell out of that item well! Found on Tidewater Dr in Norfolk, it reminds me of the spot I embarrassed myself at in Philly. From memory, it tasted similar too!
Dominic’s of New York-
Yea, yea it’s a chain but I’m a fool for them. Maybe it’s a bit of nostalgia. I remember seeing them as a kid when I’d go to Lowe’s with my dad. While they are bomb, the only problem is they make your car smell like cheesesteak the next day... so then you gotta buy another one 🤷🏾♂️
Moe is killin it, I repeat… Moe is killing it. If you arent already raving about his award-winning wings then maybe pull up for one of the sandwiches. What are you feelin? Po’Boy, Crabcake sandwich, “Norfolk Drip” ooor the cheesesteak?? Listen when I tell you, don’t sleep. Don’t mess up and pull up with David Regular Chef Hannah is there… something as simple as adding the sweet pepper jelly makes it POP OFF!!
